Useful Elite Tennis Terminology
Trading ball, Building ball, Finishing ball:
A Trading ball is only used in practice to build technique. Slow speed gives time to work on your correct body position and racket pathway. A Building Ball is used to create opportunities. The flight pathway is high and these shots usually have heavy topspin. This flight pathway is sometimes referred to as a Rainbow, which is easier for many players to understand. A Finishing Ball is usually hit from high balls into the hit zone. The flight pathway is often referred to as a Laser Beam as you should encourage the player to aim at the net tape. These balls often finish the rally. Built –in Recovery: Modern tennis requires exceptionally fast court coverage. This is commonly achieved by reaching the ball with an open-stance (feet diagonally aligned). On hitting the ball with an open stance, players pivot and unit turn their core and shoulders , thus recovering simultaneously whilst hitting the ball. One, Two, Three, Four and Triangles: For advance drills, the court is divided into four sections. Please see diagram. Targets can be placed deep or short in these areas for drills covered. Building a knowledge of affective combinations of shots to these numbers is the key to success in tennis. Setting targets as Triangles will force a better flight pathway of the ball than aiming for spots. Play it Off:
Play it Off simply means rewarding a successful shot required from a drill (eg, hitting the ball within a target area with the player then trying to win the rally). Playing the point off should be encouraged as it forces a closed conditions drill into an open skill which requires tactical thinking to be applied. It also greatly increases players motivation to focus on getting the drill correct. Split Step: A small jump with feet shoulder or wider apart performed simultaneously as the opponent strikes the ball. |
